Work Description:
As part of the SNC-Lavalin group of companies, SNC-Lavalin T & D designs, develops, and delivers engineering, including system planning and studies, procurement, and construction solutions for high voltage power transmission line and substation projects in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and abroad, from our Canadian and Brazilian offices.

SNC-Lavalin T & D has exciting full time career opportunities for Junior, Intermediate and Senior Engineers to join our team in the area of Substation protection and control for High Voltage substations. Based out of our Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto offices, our Electrical Engineers (P&C) are responsible for protective relay settings and for the delivery of Protection & Control systems for our high voltage substation projects.

The Electrical Engineer (P&C) is required to work within a multi-discipline team to develop efficient and reliable Protection & Control systems. The incumbent will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The incumbent will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals.

This position is accountable to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including SNC-Lavalin’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

Additional accountabilities for the Electrical Engineer (P&C) include:
• Prepare conceptual design of the complex projects.
• Carry out/review/analyze complex technical studies and project scopes.
• Develop and review technical specifications, drawings and standards of equipment/ projects.
• Review the design based memorandum, detailed engineering scope and guide the assigned discipline engineers to align the engineering deliverables according to project requirements.
• Work closely with peers to ensure accurate delivery and thorough electrical design that will meet industry standards and specifications, and meet good engineering practices.
• Maintain complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
• Maintain good working relationship with internal groups that support project such as other Engineering disciplines, Drafting, Procurement, Construction and Project Management etc.
• Selection of equipment and material and preparation of specifications for material, equipment, construction and installation work.
• Develop relay setting calculations and coordination report.
• Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
• Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members.
• Construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
• Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to relay settings and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information. Maintaining good working relationship with internal groups that support projects such as other engineering disciplines, Drafting, Project Management etc.
• Mentoring and providing guidance to developing engineers within the department.

Qualifications for the positions include:

Junior:
• A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• Eligible for registration with APEGGA (Alberta), PEO (Ontario), or APEGBC (British Columbia).
• 1 – 2 years experience in substation protection and control design.

Intermediate:
• A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• Eligible for registration with APEGGA (Alberta), PEO (Ontario), or APEGBC (British Columbia).
• A minimum of 5 years experience in substation protection and control design.

Senior:
• A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• Eligible for registration with APEGGA (Alberta), PEO (Ontario), or APEGBC (British Columbia).
• A minimum of 10 years experience in substation protection and control design.

Additional Qualifications for the positions include:

• Experience on MathCAD, ASPEN or ETAP software is an asset
• Experience on PSCAD or EMTP software is an asset
• Experience on relay setting and coordination is an asset
• Experience on SVC, Series Compensation and/or HVDC converter stations is an asset
• Knowledge of modern power system, power system protection and relay technologies.
• Strong client focus.
• Knowledge of Canadian and Alberta codes and standards, including OH&S Regulations, CSA and AECUC codes is an asset.

·         Knowledge of engineering reviews, HAZOP, other safety studies and hazardous area classifications
·         Knowledge of gas processing plant maintenance & experience in working with contractors
·         Thorough knowledge of safety in plant maintenance operations, maintenance strategies like RCM, RBI, TPM etc.
·         Familiar with applicable international standards, Plant design specifications & philosophies, statutory regulations & requirements for safety & environment

Essential Responsibilities

* Working from customer’s written or verbal specifications, specify and apply Variable Speed AC Drive Systems, Medium and Low voltage Switchgear, MCC’s and related equipment, and / or
* Carry out Power System Analysis, Motor Starting Studies, Protective Relay Settings and Co-ordination, Harmonic Analysis and Power Factor Correction, and / or
* From a solid foundation of engineering expertise, develop and upgrade existing control and power equipment to the standards and functionality required for today and tomorrow, to keep GE in the foreground of technical innovation
* Design and /or apply PLC or other digitally-based variable voltage power conversion excitation control systems for custom-built large synchronous machines up to 70 MW.
* Plan, coordinate, and provide technical and project guidance to engineering team members in various global locations.
* Provide technical support to CAD, manufacturing, test, and commissioning and service personnel.
* Provide technical support to sales and marketing personnel in the pursuit of new business opportunities.
* Provide leadership in advancing the competitive position of GE’s large motor and generator products through continuous improvement of product designs and design processes, or the application of new techniques and technologies.

Qualifications/Requirements
